Despite
all protests, mom puts Billy to bed,
then turns out the lights and closes the door,
leaving the boy alone in the darkened
bedroom. As Billy's imagination soon gets
the better of him, the shadows start
to resemble dark and evil things -- been
messing with the Ancient Ones again
young man?
When the shadows start to solidify, he
springs from his bed and screams for
mom... |

The
fascist narrator pipes up, saying how
important it is to be neat and clean, as
the camera pans down to Don: a rough and
tumble looking fellow, who seems healthy
enough, but is a little unkempt. Herr
narrator takes him to task for his awful
appearance and then turns back the sands of
time until we find Don still in bed.
Herr Narrator chides him out of bed
early so he'll have plenty of time to
properly get ready for school... |

There
isn't much of a plot to Signal
30,
even
for a Driver's Ed scare film.
Now most of the ones I remember saved
the carnage for the end to punctuate the
importance of highway safety. But not
this thing. Aside from a brief look at
officer training and police procedurals,
the accident footage comes fast and
furious -- completely raw and totally
unfiltered. Not for the squeamish... |

The
confused Jerry heads home, but like
everything else, his family has changed,
too. His eldest daughter is off to join
a farm collective to rid herself of her
parent's bourgeoisie influence. And when her
boyfriend shows up in a Russian uniform
to escort her away, Jerry protests that
he can't just bust in without a warrant.
But
the boyfriend says as a member of The
Party, he can and will, comrade... |

The
narrator continues, saying that people
are smart enough to avoid a cobra's
poison. But then why are so many people
ready, willing and able to fall victim
to another kind of poison -- the
poisoned horror of drug addiction! The
short then proceeds to show us exactly
how to do what they don't want us to do.
Anybody else see a problem with that? |

As
the day progresses, Cindy's inhibitions
melt away. There's a brief
self-realization that her mother was the
root cause of her hang-ups, but that
doesn't matter now because she's naked
and there ain't a dang thing mom can do
about it. She and Steve take a stroll by
the lake and Cindy admits to finally
being free -- thanks to the power of her
nudity... |
